Chromatography Lab
This lab was based on solubility of plant pigment and how well it dissolves in the solvent. The mixture was plant pigment and the solvent had to travel up and pass through the mixture. The two solvents were water and alcohol. In this lab we had to separate the pigment .We had to put them into two containers and time them. The first time we had to run them both for ten minutes and we had to compare them and observe how much the two segments had gone up. From this picture you can understand that water is more soluble than alcohol. In the start both the water and the alcohol look very similar and my hypothesis was that the alcohol was going to be more soluble but the opposite was show. In 15 minutes the ink was already half way up the paper. The alcohol on the other hand, showed how less soluble it was because it had not gone up very much. The alcohol was just barely touching the plant pigment, but when we fixed the problem the alcohol was going even slower. From the data shown the alcohol is less soluble and the water is more soluble. In 15 minutes the water was half way up and by 15 minutes the alcohol barely went trhough the plant pigment. By 45 minutes the alcohol had not gone up very much, it had only gone up at least a fourth of the chromatography strips.
